Management Plan

Improving the Ground Flora

The condition of the ground flora in Holt Copse is a direct result of lack of light getting to the woodland floor because of the density of the shrub layer, and to some extent the canopy cover of the oaks. In the past the ground flora has developed with the management of Holt Copse. When active management ceased, the ground flora and associated wildlife went into decline. Improving the ground flora is being done by re-coppicing the hazel on an annual cycle throughout the woodland and clearing some areas of bramble. The rotation, ie. the length of time before the first years cut is re-cut, will be between 7 and 10 years; this should give favourable conditions for ground flora to develop in.

Continuation and Regeneration of Oak Trees

The canopy of the woodland is extensive (80% of the copse area), and the age of the trees that make up the woodland is best described as mature. Very little oak re-generation from acorns is making its way into the lower parts of the canopy. This is due to a number of factors, competition from the shrub layer being the biggest factor.
