WELWYN WILTON KATZ. Born at London, Ontario, Welwyn Wilton Katz taught
mathematics at the high-school level before she began writing fantasy
novels in 1982.
Welwyn's early fiction - like C. S. Lewis's Narnia series - is a
contemporary,
Canadian exploration of children's involvement in otherworldly tensions
between good and evil. Tau Ridoo (1983) relates the adventures of a group
of chilren on summer leave who discover the entrance to a mysterious
world at the back of a closet. Modern Britain becomes a setting for
Witchery Hill (1989) and Sun God, Moon Witch (1986).

The highly popular False Face (1987), set in the author's hometown of
London, was a winner of the International Fiction Contest. Welwyn's
prestige continued with The ThirdMagic (1988), which captured the
Governor General's Award. The novel describes the war between opposing
spiritual forces in the world of Nwm.

Weiwyn demonstrates a keen knowledge of ancient mythologies and
characters' personal introspections. In recognition for her work, like
the more recent Come Like Shadows (1993) and Time Ghost (1994), she has
won numerous honours, including the notable Vicky Metcalf Award.

One of Canada's leading children's writers, Weiwyn currently lives with
her family in London, Ontario.

Reading: Katz, Time Ghost (Douglas and Mcintyre: 1994); The Junior
Encylopedia of Canada, vol.3 (Hurtig: 1988).

Welwyn married KATZ.
